I Have Gapped Teeth: Is Invisalign® Right for Me?
Gaps between teeth are incredibly common. In fact, studies estimate that up to 25% of adults have them. But that doesn’t necessarily make things easier if the space between your teeth causes you to worry every time you laugh, smile, or speak.
Some people put off addressing the issue because they worry the only treatment option is braces. However, that isn’t the case. Invisalign® aligners can close the gap in your smile within a few short months without the brackets, wires, and rubber bands of traditional braces.
At his practice in Manhattan, New York, general and cosmetic dentist Robert G. Veligdan, DMD, often uses Invisalign to close gaps between teeth. He serves people in the Columbus Circle, Midtown West, and Hell's Kitchen neighborhoods.
Keep reading to learn why gapped teeth happen, how Invisalign can correct these issues, and what to expect during treatment.
What causes gapped teeth?
Gapped teeth can occur for various reasons, including:
- Natural spacing due to jaw size or genetics
- Childhood habits, such as thumb sucking
- Missing teeth, including those lost to extractions, which allows other teeth to shift
- Gum disease, which can make teeth loosen and drift
For many people, a space between the teeth is a cosmetic concern, but it can also increase the risk of issues, such as cavities and gum disease.
That’s because large gaps between the teeth allow bacteria and plaque to build up. When a gap forms in a hard-to-reach area, it can be difficult to brush, floss, and keep it clean.
How does Invisalign help fix tooth gaps?
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that uses clear aligners made of durable thermoplastic to apply gentle pressure to your teeth. Over time, this gentle pressure helps move your teeth into better alignment, closing any gaps and improving your smile’s appearance.
Invisalign aligners fit snugly over your upper or lower teeth and are made from transparent material. Many people describe the aligners as more comfortable than metal braces.
They’re discreet, too! We recommend wearing your aligners for 20-22 hours daily, but if you have a big event, such as a work presentation or wedding, you can remove them.
Invisalign is usually recommended for mild or moderate spacing issues. If the gap is larger than a single tooth or you have other dental issues, such as gum disease, we may recommend a different approach.
What to expect during Invisalign treatment
Invisalign treatment is an ongoing process that usually takes between 12 and 18 months. Some gaps may require longer treatment.
If Dr. Veligdan determines that Invisalign treatment can help close your tooth gap, he takes digital scans of your teeth and bite and sends them to a nearby lab. Technicians at the lab use your scans to make a set of custom aligners that fit perfectly.
Once your aligners are ready, you return to our office and try them on. If they fit well, Dr. Veligdan provides wear and care instructions. Following your treatment schedule is essential for success. If you take your aligners out too often, the gap may not close.
